  • Judd Apatow’s ‘Funny People’ bombs like a bad stand-up routine

    Posted on July 31st, 2009 Joe Collins No comments

    SAY IT AIN’T SO JOE!

    The funny business is lame in “Funny People,” and the people feel phony. So what’s left in this dramedy about a comic’s near-tragedy? Well, how do bad standup and schmaltzy emotions sound?
    arts-funny-people-584
    It’s not that writer-director Judd Apatow isn’t aware of the beats he needs to hit. Apatow was comedy’s best-kept secret until “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” “Knocked Up” and countless bromance flicks made him a brand name. Here, he just doesn’t see how the insular world of show business rarely connects to audiences, how raunchy guy-speak isn’t all that amusing and how sad clowns aren’t fun.

    I have loved the iPhone, but now I am quitting the iPhone.

    This is not an easy decision.
    I was there in January 2007 when it was announced and I bought the first iPhone as soon as it was available. I happily bought the iPhone 3G a year later. I’ve proudly yelled “I Am A Member Of The Cult Of iPhone.” I’ve been an unabashed cheerleader for the device to all who’ll listen. And I’ve scoffed at developers who said they’d abandon the platform.

    Posted on July 27th, 2009 Joe Collins No comments

    Good Read.

    VIA Talking Free Points Sports

    July 27th- It should’ve been made clear to us over a year ago.

    The usually cheerful David Stern looked as if he carried the burden of a nation, as he stood somber and stone faced before a throng of reporters, forced to address the then recent allegations of an NBA referee who bet on games he officiated.

    On the eve of the 2008 NBA Finals, what some perceived to be one of the biggest scandals to hit professional sports in the last 25 years, weighed heavily on the mind of the NBA commissioner who saw the soundness of his league hanging in the balance.

    But as the main purveyor of sports news, ESPN did little to give the story of this magnitude its proper traction, quickly isolating it to one day’s worth of intense coverage. The possible compromising of games which threatened the integrity of one of America’s major sports drifted away from the screens of the Walt Disney owned company like two ships passing in the night. The same could be said about ESPN’s recent coverage (or lack thereof) of a civil lawsuit filed by a woman claiming Super Bowl winning quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, sexually assaulted her in 2008.

  • Former Alaska Governor (Dumb Ass Broad) Says, ‘I Feel Great’ After Leaving Office

    Posted on July 27th, 2009 Joe Collins No comments

    (I ought to cover them racist ass Cambridge Cops and President Obama’s feelings towards the situation..but that’s played out like Kwame, and them Fucking Polka Dots..)

    Alaskans start the work week with a new governor, Sean Parnell, and an old puzzle: Why exactly did the old governor, Sarah Palin, step down, and what are her plans for the future?
    Share

    So far, only a possible family vacation is on tap, her husband Todd Palin told ABC News.

    “Maybe a little moose hunting, what do you think?” he said, adding that he was “very proud” of his wife.

    Palin officially stepped down as Alaska’s governor late Sunday, saying her reasons for doing so should “be obvious.” But for those still in the dark, she repeated her belief that she thought she could more effectively serve the people of the state by leaving office.

    She went out with a bang, delivering a fiery and candid 15-minute farewell speech to a crowd of supporters in Fairbanks, Alaska, in which she lambasted the media and touted Alaska’s history of energy independence.

    At times, it sounded as if the former vice presidential candidate was back on the campaign trail, stumping for fiscal conservatism, the development of natural energy resources and moral conservatism.

    Yet she gave no hint as to her future in politics, saying only she stepped down in order to spare Alaskans “politics as usual” from her governorship turning into a “lame duck session,” with a year-and-a-half to go.

    Crackberry Addicts Unite: New T-Mobile Blackberry 8520 is Mac-Ready

    Todd R. Weiss

    It’s almost here! Blackberry’s first-ever fully-featured, native Apple support — finally — right out of the box is being offered in the new Blackberry 8520 smartphone that will be available to T-Mobile USA customers starting August 5.

    Also topping the new features list for the device is its touch-sensitive optical trackpad, which had been rumored for months to replace trackball found on other Blackberry devices.

    The integrated new Mac compatibility will get into gear in September, when the phone’s maker, Research in Motion, officially launches the long-awaited Blackberry for Mac desktop software that promises to make life easier for Mac-loving Blackberry users. Until Blackberry for Mac, Blackberry users have had to use third-party software such as PocketMac to use their devices with their Mac computers.

    The new 8520, along with the just-on-the-horizon Blackberry for Mac software, will be a huge gain for Mac users who until now had to put up with some frustrations to bring together their beloved Macs and Blackberries. There is, however, one caveat: Blackberry for Mac will support only Mac OS X version 10.5.5 or higher, leaving some users in the cold for now.

    The new 8520 will be offered in black or frost, and includes a built-in 2-megapixel digital camera in an attractive if not distinctive 4.29-inch-tall, 2.36-inch-wide and .54-inch-thin unit.

    Other features include:

    * New dedicated on-screen media keys that allow users to instantly skip songs, pause their music or repeat favorite songs while easily answering calls.
    * A full QWERTY keyboard.
    * Wi-Fi 802.11b/g enabled
    * 256MB flash memory
    * 1150 mAHr rechargeable Lithium battery, with a claimed 4.5 hours of talk time
    * 320-by-240 pixel screen
    * 2.64-inch diagonal color display
    * A hot-swappable microSD/SDHC memory card slot, with an included 1GB card.
    * Quad-band world phone: EGDE/GPRS/GSM (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)

    No pricing has yet been announced by T-Mobile, but customers can sign up for updates when pricing is available.

    Amazing — native Mac support comes to Blackberries. Has hell frozen over today, too?

  • Apple/Steve Jobs and Co. coming with the Apple Tablet…huh..

    Wow, Steve Jobs and Co. don’t stop……what a concept !
    (Not actual tablet…just concept pic)

    Apple Mixing Up A Tablet For ‘Cocktail’
    Apple may be preparing to shake up the music industry again, this time by introducing an interactive digital album that may or may not be destined for a Steve Jobs-designed Apple tablet.

    The new album format, currently codenamed ‘Cocktail,’ is designed to deliver more than just music to consumers, with Apple and the four major record labels hoping that customers will be drawn to features such as photos, lyrics sheets, video clips and liner notes to increase paid downloads. Apple is working with EMI, Sony Music, Warner Music and Universal Music Group for a September launch of Cocktail, according to a Reuters report.

    But as it did with the iTunes music store, Apple may also be preparing to roll out a new piece of hardware for these new digital downloads. Rumors about an Apple tablet have been circulating for what seems like years.

    This latest round of Apple tablet rumors is being spurred on by Apple Insider, which is reporting that the device is part of the Cupertino Crew’s 2010 roadmap and will be launched in the first quarter of next year. Apple Insider also reports that the tablet became one of Steve Jobs’ own pet products, which may have delayed the development and release of the device until it met Jobs’ exacting standards.

    Early word indicates that the long rumored Apple tablet will be something of an upsized iPod Touch. The screen will reportedly measure 10-inches and the device will be capable of connecting to the Web.

    Price on the Apple tablet — like any other official details — has yet to be disclosed but the blogosphere is buzzing that the device will fill the netbook niche that Apple has decided to ignore, with the traditional premium that Jobs and Co. attach to their hardware. So, while netbooks tend to max out around $500, speculation holds that the Apple tablet will likely run about $800.

    It seems likely that a tablet device from Apple is in the near future, and the rollout of the new Cocktail album format would mirror Apple’s past patterns. It’s unlike Apple to release a mobile device — notebooks excluded — that doesn’t have reoccurring revenue play tied into it: the iPhone has the iTunes store and downloads; the iPhone has the App Store.

    And assuming the device does meet Jobs’ exacting standards, then it is likely that Apple is gearing up to release a device that is called a tablet but that will probably redefine the category entirely.

  • Box Office: ‘G-Force’ knocks off ‘Harry Potter’ at box office

    Posted on July 27th, 2009 Joe Collins No comments

    The weekend box office was dominated by new releases, the most notable being “G-Force” knocking “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” from the top spot, according to Box Office Mojo, a Web site that tracks box office revenues.

    The top five films at the box office, along with their studio estimates were:

    * “G-Force” from Disney — $32,152,000
    * “Harry Potter” from Warner Bros. — $30,000,000
    * “The Ugly Truth” from Sony — $27,000,000
    * “Orphan” from Warner Bros. — $12,770,000
    * “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” from Fox — $8,200,000

    “G-Force,” “The Ugly Truth” and “Orphan” all made their debuts during the weekend.

    According to a report on Box Office Mojo, “G-Force” was shown on about 5,200 screens at 3,697 sites. The report also says that the 3-D version of the movie accounted for 56 percent of its total gross from the weekend.

    “The Ugly Truth” was shown on about 3,500 screens at 2,882 sites and “Orphan” was shown on about 3,100 screens at 2,750 sites, the report said.

    The year’s top movie, “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” fell to sixth place, bringing in an estimated $8,000,000 during the weekend. However, the movie has cracked the top 10 list of top domestic grosses of all time. The movie has brought in $379,090,000.

    The Paramount film passed “Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” to break into the top 10. Just ahead in ninth place is “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” with $380,270,577. Past “Star Wars” is the $400 million treshold and “Spider-Man” with $403,706,375.
